Culturally Responsive Teaching Video - Staff Meeting

Latishia Wilson, an awesome DRT, shared this video. This video changed my perspective about what it means to be a culturally responsive teacher. I really enjoy using a wide variety of strategies. For example, I have noticed that "Pick a Stick" really increases engagement and active listening. I am also using "Musical Around the Room" to preview vocabulary words. What are your thoughts and reflections about this video.

We would love to use this model during our read-aloud time...unfortunately, there's not always enough time to do all of the strategies we saw in the video. We do see this fitting very nicely in content, though.

Our group observed a lot of great teaching strategies. The teacher was very concise and the students were fully aware of her expectations (a lot of training and practice was evident). Additionally, students were given several chances to move around the room.

Culturally responsive teaching builds in opportunities to address variance in learning styles such as structured but innovative transitions that involve music and movement. We really liked the action thermometer. It was a busy classroom, but fun and productive.
