A Student Discourse on "Bud Not Buddy"

Christine Kelly is diving into multicultural text.   Here are her students thoughts on "Bud Not Buddy."
Christine explains, "I don't think the kids look at Bud as an African American... They just look at him as a kid...."

Teachers, what are your thoughts on how children perceive race when reading multicultural text.  Feel free to comment.

Bud Not Buddy is a good book because it shows the feelings that the characters show when certain things happen. For instance, when Bud was in the Amoses' shed and he was stung a-lot by bees. You may also feel like you are there when it is happening. i know that you will love this book once you understand that this is The Great Depression when he is trying to get on the train for free. I hope you will read the book and enjoy it as much as I am. By Joanne

Bud, Not Buddy is a book about a 10 year old kid, Bud. His mom died when he was only six. He's now trying to find his dad. He goes through a lot of trouble trying to find his dad.

I could really connect with this book because all of my belongings are really special to me.

I think you should read the book to find out if he finds his dad.

BUD, NOT BUDDY is a great book for students because it crosses the misery of the Great Depression and the funny character of Bud Caldwell. I could not put this book down. I made a lot of connections with the book because Bud reminds me of myself because I am feel like he does many times. He feels lonely, and sometimes I do too.

Bud, Not Buddy is a good book for grades 3-6. The book talks about a orphan that lived in the orphanage because his father left him when he was a boy and his mother pasted when he was 6. Bud gets taken care of by a family but their son, Todd is very mean. He sticks a pencil up his nose and beats up Bud. After that, Bud decides to leave the family and find his father. You can join Bud on this cool journey.
